COLUMBUS—Today, the Ohio Senate announced that State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) has been appointed to serve as Ranking Member of the Senate Education Committee and Vice Chair on the Finance Subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education for the 132nd General Assembly.

"The committees that I have been assigned will face significant challenges and complex issues during this General Assembly, but I’m excited to bring my experience, expertise, and institutional knowledge to the table,” said Senator Sykes. “I welcome the opportunity to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address the needs of my fellow Ohioans. The critical issues in these committees include adequate funding and access to early childhood education, college affordability, support for our men and women in the armed forces, and affordable healthcare for those most in need.”

In addition to his leadership roles on the Education committee and Finance subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education, Senator Sykes has been appointed to serve on the following committees:

  • Education (Ranking Member)
  • Finance - Primary and Secondary Education Sub Committee (Vice Chair)
  • Finance
  • Local Government, Public Safety, and Veterans Affairs
  • Public Utilities
  • Health and Human Services and Medicaid

Ad Hoc Committees:

  • Joint Education Oversight Committee (Ranking Minority Member)
  • Joint Medicaid Oversight Committee

“I look forward to representing the 28th district and working with my colleagues in the Statehouse to develop sound and constructive public policy. Together we can create policies that are not only good for the constituents in my district, but also promote the social and economic well-being of citizens throughout our state,” said Senator Sykes.
