This week, state Senators Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) and Kirk Schuring (R-Canton) announced the passage of their legislation to foster economic development in and near airports.

“Airports are vital to a region’s economic viability and overall quality of life, which is increasingly important as we work to overcome the setbacks caused by the pandemic,” said Sykes. “The creation of Airport Development Districts will lead to infrastructure improvements and an increased number of flights servicing the region. These changes will help increase tourism, decrease crime and raise property values in areas near our airports.”

This legislation, which was amended into Senate Bill 259, will authorize certain regional airport authorities, port authorities and municipal corporations to create an Airport Development District to generate revenue for airport infrastructure and other expenditures.

“It is always great to work with my good friend Senator Sykes in a bipartisan way to help our region. This will be a valuable tool to enhance the viability of the Akron-Canton Airport which is in the heart of the Akron-Canton Metroplex,” Schuring said.

Sub. S. B. 259 now goes to the governor for his signature.
