Sykes Announces $20.7M Investment Across Senate District 28

Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) commended the Ohio Senate’s passage of the state’s capital budget (House Bill 2), which includes $20.7 million for 33 projects within Ohio’s 28th Senate District, which includes parts of Summit and Geauga Counties, and all of Portage County. 

“I am happy to announce that more than $20 million in state capital investments are being brought home to Senate District 28,” said Sykes. “This historic investment will fund several transformational projects throughout the district and will spur tremendous development and economic growth within the district.”

Overall, the bill appropriates $3.5 billion in new capital funding, $717.8 million in One-Time Strategic Community Investments Fund (OTSCIF) appropriations, and $1.98 billion in re-appropriations for unspent capital dollars. 

Some local projects in the bill include:

  • $5 million for Cascade Plaza in Downtown Akron, Summit County
  • $3.2 million for the Akron-Canton Airport in Summit County
  • $2 million for the Akron Art Museum in Summit County
  • $2 million for the Akron Zoo in Summit County
  • $1.5 million for the Ravenna Health Center in Portage County
  • $1 million for the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Portage County
  • $600,000 for the Summit County Fairgrounds
  • $400,000 for the Akron Urban League in Summit County
  • $400,000 for the Legacy Project in Summit County
  • Nearly $350,000 for the Geauga Park District in Geauga County
  • Nearly $28,000 for the Windham Historical Society in Portage County
  • Nearly $13,000 for the Palmyra Township Historical Society in Portage County
