Sykes Announces New Covid-19 Vaccination Sites in Akron

April 26, 2021
Vernon Sykes News

In response to a letter sent to Governor Mike DeWine by state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) and House Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) requesting accessible Covid-19 vaccination locations in the Akron region, one permanent vaccination site and two pop-up clinics will open in the Akron area.

“I am pleased that a new vaccination site and two pop-up clinics will open in Akron,” said Senator Sykes. “All Ohioans deserve to have equal access to the Covid-19 vaccine and that starts by making sure vaccinations sites are close to where they live. I have received both doses of the vaccine, and I encourage all Ohioans, especially Black Ohioans, to do the same to protect themselves and their loved ones.”

In Summit County, only 22.25% of Black people have received the vaccine, compared to 41.53% of white people. Out of the 60,000 Black residents in Summit County who are eligible for the vaccine, only about 19,000 have gotten one. Placing vaccination sites in accessible areas will decrease the racial disparity gap and ensure that all Ohioans receive access to the vaccine, regardless of race.
