Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) commended the Senate Finance Committee’s passage of Senate Bill 148, legislation he introduced to establish the New African Immigrants Grant and Gift Fund. The legislation will allow the New African Immigrants Commission to receive grants, gifts or appropriations from the General Assembly. “African immigrants contribute to the vibrancy of our communities and the strength of our economy, which is why we must ensure that they have access to the resources they need to be successful,” Sykes said. “These funds will help immigrants access childcare, education and employment opportunities, allowing them to develop more long-term self-sufficiency.” The New African Immigrants Commission, created by the 127th General Assembly, advises the governor, General Assembly and state agencies on policies focusing on the special issues and needs of African immigrants in Ohio. The commission currently represents more than 69,000 people who have immigrated to Ohio from more than 39 countries. The fund created under S. B. 148 will allow the commission to gather and disseminate information about people from sub-Saharan Africa. S. B. 148 now awaits a full Senate vote.
