Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) supported the Ohio Controlling Board’s decision to release over $88 million for multiple state agencies to continue their response against Covid-19.
“The Covid-19 pandemic is far from over, which is why we must continue to support the statewide response efforts,” said Sykes, who is a sitting member on the Controlling Board. “Ohio’s road to recovery is dependent on our ability to make resources accessible to those who need them most.”
The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will use $30 million in federal funds to prevent and respond to the spread of Covid-19 in Ohio's prisons. Additional funds will be allocated to agencies like the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department to continue active duty for Ohio National Guard members; the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services for psychiatric inpatient, suicide prevention and treatment referral; veterans homes in Sandusky and Georgetown; and to address increased sanitation costs throughout the state.
The Controlling Board also approved $45 million for the FEMA Public Assistance program to provide disaster assistance related to Covid-19. Last month, President Biden signed a presidential memorandum, which no longer required states to provide a 25% match to FEMA funds for Covid-19 disaster relief. Disaster assistance for the pandemic is now fully funded by the federal government.
