Columbus – This week, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) supported the Ohio Controlling Board’s decision to approve a transfer of $250,000 in General Revenue Fund appropriations from fiscal year 2020 to fiscal year 2021 to support the Food Farmacy Pilot Project.

“The pandemic has showed how critical it is for all people to have access to affordable health care,” said Sykes, who is a sitting member of the Controlling Board. “The Food Farmacy Pilot Project is going to make healthy living more attainable for those who are most in need. I’m pleased that we could help provide much-needed resources to help this program get off the ground in our area and I look forward to seeing the impact it will have.”

The Food Farmacy Pilot Project is a collaboration between the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and the Akron Children’s Hospital that aims to increase access to healthy food and medical care for Medicaid recipients and their families. The funding will help provide comprehensive medical, nutrition and lifestyle support for food-insecure patients with chronic diseases. If the project is successful, it could be scaled statewide through partnerships with other regional health systems.
