Sykes: Despite HB 228 Override, My Resolve to Pass Commonsense Gun Laws Stronger Than Ever
Today, the Republican-controlled Ohio legislature voted to override Governor John Kasich’s veto on House Bill 228, watered-down gun legislation that primarily changes burden of proof standards in cases of self-defense and further limits cities’ ability to regulate firearms.

State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) issued the following statement in response:

“I’m disappointed with today’s events, but my resolve to pass commonsense gun reform is stronger than ever. Numerous pieces of legislation were introduced this General Assembly to increase gun safety, including my bill to increase penalties for those who put children’s lives at risk by failing to safely secure their firearms in their homes. The next General Assembly must make gun safety a top priority, and show the people of Ohio we are serious about solving the gun crisis in this country.”
