Sykes Issues Statement on UAW Strikes
Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) commented on the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike expanding to Streetsboro in the 28th Senate District.
"I stand in solidarity with the auto workers across my district and the country fighting for a fair contract," Sykes said. “Auto workers made significant concessions after the 2008 financial crisis to stave off corporate bankruptcy. Since then, corporate profits have rebounded while workers are still feeling those concessions. This is the moment for both parties to receive a fair deal, and I hope they return to good faith negotiations soon.”
UAW members began striking at Big Three (Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis) factories on September 15 due to the manufacturers refusing their demands. Due to General Motors and Stellantis’ continued refusal to negotiate with the union, the strikes were expanded last Friday to 38 additional sites, including a Stellantis distribution center in Streetsboro.
