Sykes Receives First Dose of Covid-19 Vaccine
Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) received his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine at Callis Tower in Channelwood Village, which is owned and operated by Alpha Homes. It was a coordinated effort by Alpha Homes and the Summit County Public Health Department.

“Vaccines are the best way to protect ourselves and others from Covid-19. I encourage all Ohioans to get vaccinated as soon as they become eligible,” said Sykes. “And since more African Americans are dying of Covid-19 than people of any other race, it’s especially important that Black Ohioans get vaccinated.”

Sykes, who is 69 years old, became eligible to receive the vaccine earlier this month. Currently, Ohioans who are 65 and older, as well as Ohioans with a number of medical conditions, can be vaccinated.

“I am grateful for the trusted community leaders who have helped distribute the vaccine, in particular among minority citizens,” said Sykes. “However, scheduling an appointment is still not easy. Ohio must do better to make sure our most vulnerable citizens have access to the vaccine. When health officials partner with community organizations such as Alpha Home in Akron, we are able to be more effective and distribute more vaccines.”
