Sykes Respond to Revised Budget Bill
Today, Ohio Senate Democrats expressed cautious optimism about the revised version of the state’s two-year operating budget, House Bill 166. The updated bill includes longstanding Democratic budget priorities, including increased investment in health care for seniors and people with disabilities, libraries and clean water.

“After the last administration’s decade of cuts, I remain encouraged by the potential reinvestment we could see in this bill,” said Minority Leader Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights). “The devil is in the details, but we are hopeful for progress aimed at improving the quality of life of all Ohioans.”

The proposed bill changes will be examined by Senate Finance Committee this week, with an omnibus amendment expected the following week.

“There is still much to examine and our caucus will take a critical look at the bill to ensure it adequately invests in working Ohioans and the future of our state,” said state Senator and Finance Committee Ranking Member Vernon Sykes (D-Akron). “Given the Senate Republicans’ focus on tax cuts, it would be wise to consider a review of all of our state’s tax expenditures to ensure they’re effective and fair. Nevertheless, I have been encouraged by the openness of the process so far and I hope to maintain the improving efficient relationship we’ve fostered with our colleagues across the aisle.”
