Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) issued the following statement in response to Governor DeWine’s legislative proposals following the mass shooting in Dayton:
"Governor DeWine has a single, yet difficult job to do – get the Republican supermajorities in the House and Senate to join Democrats at the bargaining table so we can finally do something to try to stop senseless gun violence.
"In the aftermath of one of the most wicked acts of violence in Ohio’s history, I am worried that the General Assembly will not act because of political considerations. As one of the 134 people in Ohio with the direct power to change our laws, I am prepared to join whoever has the will to act. I am confident that a compromise can be reached that protects the 2nd Amendment and keeps weapons of war out of the hands of those threatening violence. The worst thing we can do is nothing.
"The people of Ohio demand action. The country is watching. If we want to continue calling Ohio a national leader, we must seize opportunities to lead the nation. This is one of those times."
