This week, state Senator Dr. Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) supported the decision by the Ohio Controlling Board to release $52.5 million in federal funding to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services for improvements in the state’s unemployment compensation system.

“The funds appropriated are essential to getting Ohioans the compensation they need during these difficult times,” said Sykes, who sits on the Controlling Board. “These funds will allow the government to improve the unemployment insurance system so Ohioans can receive their benefits more quickly.”

The Controlling Board also approved the release of over $2.5 million in capital funds for the improvement of Portage Lake Dam.

“It is important that we continue to use our limited resources to create jobs,” said Sykes. “We can get Ohioans to work while improving the infrastructure of Ohio by using capital funds like in this project.”
