DeMora Applauds Passage of Legislation to Make Buckeye Official State Candy

Today, state Senator Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) celebrated the Senate’s passage of bipartisan legislation to officially designate the buckeye candy as the state candy of Ohio, honoring one of the state’s most recognizable symbols and sweetest traditions.

“The buckeye candy is more than just a dessert; it is a reflection of Ohio’s culinary heritage and a tradition unique to the state of Ohio,” said DeMora. “Much like the buckeye tree itself, the candy is a symbol of pride, community, and a shared identity that connects generations of Ohioans.”

The buckeye, a confection consisting of rich peanut butter dipped in smooth chocolate made to resemble the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree, has become a longstanding symbol of the state’s cultural identity. 

Often associated with The Ohio State University and Buckeye Nation, the buckeye is not only recognized nationally as an iconic part of the state’s identity but has long been and continues to be a favorable treat and beloved staple for family and community gatherings, holiday celebrations, and athletic events across the state.

The legislation emphasizes the buckeye candy’s historical and cultural significance while emphasizing its unique role in traditions, cuisine, and community pride in Ohio.

Now, the buckeye candy is one step closer to joining the ranks of its fellow state symbols, such as the buckeye tree, cardinal, and scarlet carnation, further highlighting the history, pride, and traditions that encompass the Buckeye State.

Senate Bill 247 now heads to the Ohio House for consideration.
