Today, state Senator Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) condemned Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s decision to send out the private voter registration data of nearly 8 million Ohioans to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

“The U.S. Constitution gives states the sole authority to run and administer elections, and this is a pure capitulation of our elections sovereignty to appease the President,” said DeMora. “What other possible explanation is there for the DOJ to get access to our secure files than to attack Ohioans who disagree with them politically? It will be Ohioans who will suffer from this decision. The bar is on the floor for Secretary LaRose to stand up for Ohioans, but he always finds a way to disappoint anyway.”

Since May 2025, the Justice Department has demanded that every state send its full voter files, including private information such as driver’s license numbers and social security numbers. Most states have refused to send full voter registration lists and instead have sent publicly available versions that contain all relevant information while removing sensitive private information. Ohio is one of 12 states that have voluntarily sent over the private information of millions of residents to the DOJ.
