DeMora Blasts Republican Supreme Court Hypocrisy

Today, state Senator Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) condemned remarks made by Republican Ohio Supreme Court Justice Joe Deters criticizing “judicial activism” among Ohio judges, despite rampant partisan judicial activism on the Ohio Supreme Court.

“Justice Deters has shown he is happy to legislate from the bench when it’s convenient for him,” said DeMora. “Republican hypocrisy is endless! I wish he had heeded his own advice and ‘stayed in his lane’ when he decided that boneless wings can have bones in them. I’m sure Deters will have no problem with judicial activism when the Court takes on abortion and voting rights cases.”

During his speech at the Ohio Supreme Court Investiture Ceremony, Justice Deters criticized judicial activism, saying judges need to “stay in their lane” and refrain from “inserting ourselves and our personal beliefs into the process.” Deters was appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court in 2023, becoming the first justice in several decades to join the court without prior experience as a judge.
