Today, state Senator Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) introduced Senate Bill 196, legislation that would cap fees from third-party ticket sellers at five dollars.

“Ohioans are getting ripped off by Ticketmaster and other ticket resellers with out-of-control prices, and working families are the ones footing the bill,” said DeMora. “These companies’ predatory fees can be the difference between a family enjoying a concert, game, or show together, or being forced to stay at home. A night out shouldn’t feel like a luxury. It should be something every Ohioan can afford without worrying about getting nickel-and-dimed at checkout.”

The bill targets the surging costs driven by junk fees added to ticket purchases. Right now, service fees can make up 27 to 31 percent of total ticket prices, gouging consumers for nothing more than a digital transaction.

Under the proposed legislation, any third-party vendor charging more than five dollars in fees would be considered unfair and deceptive business practices and referred to the Attorney General for enforcement.

Senate Bill 196 now awaits committee assignment.
