Today, state Senator Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) spoke out against the rising trend of Islamophobia and antisemitism in the central Ohio region.

“All people, regardless of race, religion or creed, deserve the right to peacefully protest and share their beliefs free from the threat of harm,” said DeMora. “The rising tide of Islamophobia and antisemitism is disgusting. I will continue to fight, as I always have, to ensure that everyone feels safe expressing their First Amendment rights.”

On October 13, a demonstrator marching in support of Palestinians was purposely struck in downtown Columbus when a truck swerved out of his lane to hit the demonstrator.

On November 9, the Hillel building at Ohio State was vandalized by two individuals who ripped out Israeli flags and yelled antisemitic remarks.

According to CAIR Ohio, the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, reports of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab discrimination are up 600% from October 7 through November 4 in Ohio. According to the Anti-Defamation League, reports of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. have increased by 316% compared to last year.
