"The property tax crisis we find our state in today is not new. In 2023, the Joint Committee on Property Tax Review and Reform was created to study and make recommendations on what legislators knew was turning into an unavoidable issue: unaffordable property taxes.

I proudly served on this committee, where we heard hours of testimony from individuals representing local governments, libraries, schools and more about the complexities and shortcomings of our property tax system. We heard about the urgent need for tax reform that does not come at the expense of funding for local schools, fire, police, EMS, libraries or assistance for people with developmental disabilities.

 
The committee made a number of recommendations, including several proposals with bipartisan support, like the creation of a property tax circuit breaker. But two years later, property taxes have continued to rise, and instead of taking action, yet another group has been formed to study the issue..."
