COLUMBUS—State Senator Bill Reineke (R-Tiffin) has issued the following statement on the WIN Waste permit announcement:

"While I am appreciative WIN Waste was not granted a full permit, I remain strongly committed to the community’s voices being heard and their concerns being solved. Our local elected officials and citizens have long feared that not enough is being done to maintain proper oversight of the landfill or that it is being given a free pass to the community’s detriment. I am hopeful that together, with all parties involved, we can commit to listening and learning from the people of Seneca County.

Ohio should not be a net importer of trash. Our state continues to attract incredible investments for our future, and Seneca County and all rural residents must be part of this growth without being hampered by local trash issues. Other states are changing their trash policies, and that makes Ohio their new dumping ground. This is completely unacceptable.

I will continue working with my colleagues in the Ohio House and Ohio Senate as well as with the administration to develop and implement a legislative solution that supports environmental studies and more local oversight. Doing so is critical to ensuring that Ohio does not become the “Trash State.” It is time we confront and legislatively address this elephant in the room once and for all."
