COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate concurred with changes made to Senate Bill 147, sponsored by Senator Bill Reineke (R-Tiffin), that allows counties a mechanism for citizen oversight though their local government and local health departments for a landfill in their county.

"Having local oversight over landfills that significantly impact local communities provides much needed relief for citizens feeling the immediate effects from these sites," said Senator Reineke. "I'm grateful to my colleagues in the House for recognizing the need for this legislation."

"Understanding that in 1993 the landfill on Route 223/224 occupied 83 acres, while today's operations occupy over 1,100 acres and has had six different owners. My constituents will be here for generations in the future and deserve adequate oversight provided for in this legislation. I wish to thank Representative Click and all other local officials and citizens who came to Columbus to testify and support SB 147," said Reineke.

Senate Bill 147 authorizes Solid Waste Management Districts (SWMD) to levy a permissive fee on the disposal of construction and demolition debris. The bill also provides a process for the separation of a county from a solid waste district.

Senate Bill 147 now heads to Governor DeWine for further consideration.
