Chavez and Craig Announce Resolution to Renew State Capital Improvement Program
COLUMBUS—State Senators Brian Chavez (R-Marietta) and Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus) hosted a press conference highlighting Senate Joint Resolution 4 which urges voters to renew the State Capital Improvement Program (SCIP) at the Ohio Public Works Commission.
This is the fifth iteration of the program and, if passed by the General Assembly, it will be included on Ohioans' ballot in May 2025. The SCIP provides grants and loans for local municipalities for infrastructure capital projects.
"This program has proven over decades to be a crucial resource for municipalities across the state and especially in rural areas," said Chavez. "I have heard from many local officials whose counties have benefited from these funds for the improvement of roads, bridges, and more in their communities. Necessary infrastructure projects simply could not be undertaken without this funding source."
“It is crucial that we find ways to support local public works projects in Ohio that will not only improve the quality of our communities but also create economic growth and provide new job opportunities for Ohio workers,” said Craig. “Although this program is not new, reauthorizing its funding is crucial for maintaining the vital public infrastructure and water systems that we rely on every day.”
SJR 4 is the fifth iteration of the SCIP and, if approved by the voters, will authorize a total of $2.5 billion for a ten-year period from fiscal years 2027-2036.
