Today, state Senator Kent Smith (D-Euclid) took the oath of office to continue serving in the Ohio Senate during the 136th General Assembly as Democratic Whip.

"It is a privilege to serve the residents of the 21st State Senate District,” said Smith. “I have deeply enjoyed the opportunity voters gave me during the first two years of my elected term and will bring those experiences forward with me as we begin the 136th Ohio General Assembly. I will continue to work to find bipartisan ways to eliminate poverty and the barriers to self-sufficiency across the state.

“I will continue to show up, do the work, and fight for those who sent me here. I did not miss a floor vote during the first two years in the Ohio Senate and I hope to maintain my perfect voting record during the new General Assembly term."

Perfect attendance is not uncommon for Kent Smith. During his 12 years as a Euclid School Board Member, he never missed a meeting. In addition to being the Senate Democratic Whip, Senator Smith hosts a weekly video update series about state government called In Case You Missed It: Statehouse Edition which has won awards for its content and quality.

Additionally, he is a roller derby announcer for Cleveland's Burning River Roller Derby team, a cat dad, an apple farmer, and an art and music fan.

Senator Smith will represent the 21st Senate District, which encompasses Beachwood, Bedford, Bedford Heights, Cleveland (part), Cleveland Heights, East Cleveland, Euclid, Garfield Heights, Highland Hills, Lyndhurst, Maple Heights, North Randall, Orange, Shaker Heights, South Euclid, University Heights, Warrensville Heights, and Woodmere.
