Blessing Introduces Bill Combating Vicious Dog Attacks
COLUMBUS—Senator Louis W. Blessing, III (R-Colerain Township) introduced Senate Bill 185 which changes the laws defining a vicious dog and increases penalties on owners for dog attacks.
"Protecting Ohioans from vicious dog attacks starts by making sure owners are held accountable," said Senator Blessing. "By increasing penalties, this bill discourages poor dog ownership and will help in preventing a life-altering tragedy from taking place. I'm proud to introduce legislation that will assist law enforcement in handling these horrendous attacks."
Among the penalty increases included in Senate Bill 185 are an increase to a 3rd degree felony if an owner negligently fails to prevent their dog from committing a vicious dog act. The bill also requires the court to order the dog to be humanely destroyed should it seriously injure or kill a person.
The bill has been assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee for further hearings.
