COLUMBUS—State Senator Matt Dolan (R-Chagrin Falls) today issued the following statement regarding his support for the Ohio Fairness Act, to be introduced by Senator Michael Rulli (R-Salem) and Senator Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood):

"I have heard from fellow legislators, and said many times myself, that the private sector creates jobs, not the government. The government’s job is to create an environment for private-sector job attraction.

The Ohio Fairness Act is supported by over one thousand Ohio businesses. They are advocating to the legislature that ending discriminatory practices based on sexual orientation and gender will make Ohio a more attractive place for the country’s top talent, increased business investments and population growth.

This bill codifies the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion protecting sexual orientation and gender identity from workplace discrimination. Unlike the Federal Equality Act, Ohio’s bill maintains critical religious freedoms including the ministerial exemption. Additionally, this bill does not authorize transgender girls to compete in girls’ athletics, of which I am opposed.

Along with Ohio’s competitive state taxes, reduced regulations and effective workforce training programs, the Fairness Act will make Ohio a more welcoming place to operate a business, relocate to and raise a family."
