COLUMBUS—Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima) today participated in the virtual groundbreaking announcement for his hometown of Lima becoming the newest Smart Gigabit Community.

US Ignite, a nonprofit organization that helps communities accelerate smart city initiatives, and Spectrum announced that they have awarded a multi-year grant and resources to the State of Ohio for designing and implementing smart transportation initiatives. The first project underway is in Lima, where smart technology solutions are being explored to improve traffic flow and safety at numerous railroad crossings throughout the city.

President Huffman noted the importance of this investment for the people of Lima, as the city is home to two hospitals and serves as a regional hub for those commuting and living between Toledo and Dayton. Lima has a heavy amount of rail traffic, with approximately 40 railroad crossings and more than 30 trains commuting daily through the region.

“The people of Lima have known for a long time this is a smart city with a small ’s’, and now it is a smart city with a capital ’S'. This innovation is really going to be helpful to the city, and I am thrilled Spectrum would choose my hometown for this technology,” said President Huffman.

Now as a Smart Gigabit Community, Lima will be able to increase railroad crossing safety, and make the daily drive and overall transportation safer and faster for people living and working in Lima.

The program will use sensors and other smart devices to not only study, but to provide real time data and information to drivers.

Also participating in the virtual announcement today was Lt. Governor Jon Husted, Lima Mayor David Berger, House Speaker Bob Cupp and Spectrum Group VP of Enterprise Data Products and Spectrum Smart Cities, Satya Parimi and Spectrum Group VP of Government Affairs, Gary Underwood and Bill Wallace, Chairman of the Board, US Ignite.
