COLUMBUS - On Wednesday State Senator Matt Huffman (R-Lima) joined Senate colleague, Randy Gardner (R-Bowling Green), to recognize Dan VanVorhis, who works at the Lima Adult Parole Authority Office, for being named the 2016 Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's Parole Officer of the Year.
"Officer VanVorhis is an outstanding leader in both his volunteer and professional activities," Huffman said. "He serves as a role model for younger parole officers and has demonstrated a strong record of service providing for the safety of Lima residents and all Ohioans."
VanVorhis received this award in part because of his volunteer position as coordinator of the Northwest Ohio Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which raises funds and awareness for the Special Olympics. This event involves more than 1,500 law enforcement personnel who carry torches from all four corners of Ohio before uniting to enter the opening ceremony at The Ohio State University football stadium. VanVorhis volunteers his time and effort to bring together law enforcement agencies from all across Northwest Ohio in support of this worthy cause.
A 1987 graduate of Bowling Green State University, VanVorhis began his career as a Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for the Wood County Juvenile Court. From 2009 until 2011, Dan was one of 5 Ohio parole officers assigned to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's Enforcement Unit charged with investigating criminal cases on the streets and within the DRC system. Since 2009, VanVorhis has also been assigned to the FBI's Violent Crime Task Force.
Officer VanVorhis' work throughout his career has led to several convictions in cases involving drug trafficking, human trafficking, child pornography, assault, and gun possession. He recently initiated an investigation into the disappearance of a Toledo woman that has led to more than one murder charge being filed. ###
