COLUMBUS—Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima) was sworn in today as President of the Ohio Senate on the first day of the 134th General Assembly. The oath of office was administered at his home by Judge John R. Willamowski of the Ohio Third District Court of Appeals.

President Huffman represents the 12th Ohio Senate District, which encompasses all of Allen, Champaign, Mercer and Shelby counties and parts of Auglaize, Darke and Logan counties. He was first elected to the Ohio Senate in 2016 and was re-elected last November to his second term. He served in Senate leadership as the Majority Floor Leader during the last General Assembly.

"I take this oath today with great respect for the responsibility on my shoulders," said Huffman. "My colleagues and I are committed to listening to the concerns, interests and dreams of all Ohioans as we work to recover from a turbulent year. I believe we have a singular opportunity to solve many current problems and to create a long lasting framework for good government."

President Huffman began his public service career in 1992 with his election to Lima City Council where he served for 15 years, the last eight as Council President. He was first elected to the state legislature in 2006 and served as Speaker Pro Tempore while in the Ohio House of Representatives. He has championed lower taxes and smaller, more efficient government; regulatory, redistricting, and education reforms; and the protection of states' rights, the Second Amendment, and the sanctity of life. A lifelong resident of Lima, he has practiced law for over 35 years in his family's private law practice in his hometown. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He and his wife Sheryl have four grown children and four grandchildren.
