COLUMBUS—Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima) announced today the passage of Senate Bill 52, giving local officials and residents the ability to decide whether a solar or wind development project is a good fit for their community.
"Economic development and innovative energy technology is always welcome in the State of Ohio, but not at the expense of rural communities who do not want them,” said President Huffman. “This bill keeps local residents and officials informed and in-control of where they are located.”
Senate Bill 52, sponsored by Senators Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) and Bill Reineke (R-Tiffin), will specifically allow the board of county commissioners to adopt a resolution designating one or more energy development districts for the construction of wind and solar projects. If a resolution is adopted, residents would be permitted to petition for a referendum to vote on the creation of the energy development district.
The bill also permits the county commissioners to adopt a resolution prohibiting the construction of wind and solar projects.
Senate Bill 52 will now be sent to the Ohio House for further consideration.
