Ohio Senate Passes Bill Recognizing Ohio Black Media Week
COLUMBUS-The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 210, sponsored by State Senators Michele Reynolds (R-Canal Winchester) and Vernon Sykes (D-Akron).
The legislation designates the week of the sixteenth day of March as "Ohio Black Media Week" to recognize freedom of the press, information, equity, and equality. The precise date was chosen to align Ohio's week with the National Newspapers Publishers Association’s (NNPA) annual “Black Press Week."“Black journalists play a vital role in sharing authentic stories and ensuring a diversity of perspectives," Reynolds said. "Their work enriches the narrative, shining a light on experiences that may otherwise be overlooked and promoting greater understanding among communities.”
“I am glad to see the Senate pass Senate Bill 210,” Sykes said. “This bill will honor and preserve the poignant legacy and diligent work of the Black Press.”
Senate Bill 210 now heads to the Ohio House for consideration.
