Senate Passes Reynolds Bill Designating Jo Ann Davidson Day

COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed legislation today sponsored by State Senator Michele Reynolds (R-Canal Winchester) to designate September 28 as "Speaker Jo Ann Davidson Day" in recognition of the woman who became the first female speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives.

"Speaker Jo Ann Davidson was a trailblazer in every sense of the word," said Senator Reynolds. "She championed countless initiatives aimed at bettering the lives of Ohioans. She was a mentor to many, guiding and encouraging a new generation of women in politics and service. Her leadership set a standard of excellence and compassion, inspiring other to pursue public service with integrity. Designating her birthday as Speaker Jo Ann Davidson Day is a meaningful tribute, one that will remind Ohioans of her legacy and inspire future leaders to follow her example."

Davidson served in the Ohio House for more than two decades. She held leadership roles as assistant minority whip, minority whip, and minority leader before her election as speaker in 1995.

Davidson was born on September 28  in 1927. She passed away on October 25, 2024, at age 97.
