COLUMBUS—State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) announced yesterday Secretary of State Frank LaRose testified before the Ohio Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee in support of a bill Manning introduced to update Ohio's campaign finance law and bring greater transparency to elections.
"Voters deserve to know who is spending money to influence public policy or the politics of our state," LaRose said in his testimony yesterday on Senate Bill 347.
In 2010, the Supreme Court case Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission clarified the rights of corporations, labor unions, and other entities to contribute to political organizations under the First Amendment. Since then, Ohio has not made any changes to state law in response. Senate Bill 347 would allow these expenditures by businesses and unions and regulate them the same as other entities.
"Thank you Secretary of State LaRose for supporting the effort to eliminate dark money from Ohio politics," Manning said.
