Today, state Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood), along with state Representatives Michael J. O'Brien (D-Warren) and Jon Cross (R-Kenton); state Senator Michael Rulli (R-Salem); former state Senator Sean O’Brien; Congressman Steve Chabot; President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Steve Stivers; and a delegation from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, held a press conference to announce the creation of a bipartisan, bicameral Taiwan Friendship Caucus.
“Our friends from Taiwan and their peace-loving people share with the United States and Ohioans the common values of democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law,” Sen. Antonio said. “I look forward to working with our Taiwanese friends toward the mutual economic and social advancement of both our nations, as well as preparing our state’s workforce to compete in our global economy. Working together, our future is bright.”
The partnership between Ohio and Taiwan has historically been strong, with far-reaching economic benefits. In 2020, Taiwan was ranked as Ohio’s 11th-largest trading partner in the world and Ohio’s third-largest export market in Asia. Taiwan was also Ohio’s 8th-largest market for agricultural products and livestock in the world.
“The relationship between Ohio and Taiwan will only be strengthened by the Ohio Taiwan Friendship Caucus and fortify the goodwill and understanding between our people,” Rep. O’Brien said.
“As we have been striving to be that model democracy in Asia against all odds, we still stand tall as a proud democracy because we know we have reliable friends right here in the United States,” Taiwanese Ambassador Bi-Khim Hsiao said during the press conference. “I think this bipartisan, bicameral effort of our friends here in Ohio does exemplify that partnership. I am so glad that our partnership is growing in a way that will champion and engineer more momentum.”
