Today, state Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) praised the Ohio Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 255, which designates the Officer Wayne A. Leon Memorial Highway.

“Throughout this process, we have worked with Officer Leon’s widow, Grace, to identify a stretch of road that would be meaningful for her and her family,” said Antonio. “I would like to thank the Leon family for the dedication and persistence in waiting 20 years for this recognition of Officer Leon’s sacrifice.”

The bill, which was jointly sponsored by Sen. Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland), honors former Cleveland police officer Wayne Leon. During his six and a half years of service, Wayne received many commendations from the community for his dedication. In 1998, he was awarded the Cleveland Police Department's highest award, the Medal of Honor, for his devotion to the city. He was tragically killed in the line of duty on June 25, 2000, after a routine traffic stop. Senate Bill 255 designates a section of Lorain Avenue in front of Officer Leon’s alma mater, St. Ignatius High School, as the memorial highway.

The bill now goes to the House for referral to committee.
