Today, state Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) released the following statement regarding Governor DeWine’s announcement to freeze the use of the death penalty in Ohio until a new method can be developed and then deemed constitutional by the courts.
“I applaud Governor DeWine’s decision to halt all executions in Ohio, certainly this gives policymakers an opportunity to consider all options to address those convicted of capital crimes. My hope is that one option for consideration would be to abolish the use of the death penalty and move to a conviction of life without parole in capital cases.”
Senator Antonio has introduced legislation in the last four General Assemblies calling for an end to the use of the death penalty in Ohio and replacing it with life without parole. She intends to reintroduce the same legislation this General Assembly.
