Today, state Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) applauded the Ohio Legislature’s passage of House Bills 1 and 388.

“I am so pleased that the Ohio Legislature passed these bills. I truly believe that both of these bills will make a difference in our state and will save lives,” said Antonio.

H.B. 1 passed out of the House of Representatives today, after passing out of the Senate last week. It was amended to include language from S.B. 18, Antonio’s bill to end the practice and prohibit the shackling or restraining of a pregnant inmate or placing her in solitary confinement for the duration of her pregnancy.

H.B. 388, companion legislation to Antonio’s S.B. 198, passed out of the Senate on Tuesday, after passing out of the House of Representatives in May. H.B. 388 changes the process by which patients are charged for unanticipated medical care, referred to as surprise billing, and will relieve the burden unexpected costs inflicted on patients who receive them.

Both bills now head to the desk of Governor Mike DeWine for his signature.
