State Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) today expressed concern with the approval of work requirements for Ohio’s Medicaid expansion population by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
“These restrictions will set up barriers to people accessing health care,” said Antonio. “This announcement reinforces the need for public transportation to be a priority this budget season so that Ohioans are able to travel to their doctor’s appointments and work hassle-free.”
According to an analysis by the Center for Community Solutions, Medicaid expansion helped low-income people find jobs, improved their health and led to Ohio’s uninsured rate being cut in half.
Furthermore, a review of past work requirement proposals in entitlement programs found that they don’t cut poverty and often leave participants languishing in poorly paid and temporary jobs.
“We are ready to roll up our sleeves to work with the administration to ensure that Medicaid recipients will have full access to health care,” said Antonio.
Sen. Antonio served on the House Finance Committee, where the waiver was originally debated. She currently serves on the Senate Health, Human Services and Medicaid Committee and the Joint Medicaid Oversight Committee.
