Antonio Reacts to SCOTUS Decision to Uphold Law Disarming Domestic Abusers
Today, Senate Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) reacted to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in U.S. v. Rahimi to uphold a law that prevents those who are subject to restraining orders for domestic abuse from possessing firearms.
“I applaud the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to stand with survivors and uphold a federal law that would prohibit domestic abusers from being armed,” said Antonio. “In our country, domestic abuse has a frequent and deadly correlation to gun violence. I will continue to advocate for legislation like Senate Bill 187 that would harmonize Ohio law with federal law to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. Ohioans should not have to worry about whether or not they are safe at home.”
Senate Bill 187 would remove the ability of domestic abusers to lawfully possess guns. Antonio has repeatedly introduced similar legislation during her time in the legislature including two “Safe At Home” bills that would mirror federal laws that prohibit gun possession by those subject to permanent protection orders.
