Antonio Responds to Ohio Court Decision on Ballot Language Intended to Confuse Voters on Issue 1

Today, Senate Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) responded to the Ohio Supreme Court’s decision ordering the Ohio Ballot Board to make certain changes after Republican members of the Ohio Ballot Board adopted misleading, deceptive, and argumentative language that would have appeared on the ballot in this November’s election for Issue 1, more commonly known as the “Citizens Not Politicians” redistricting constitutional amendment.

“I am thankful that the Ohio Supreme Court recognized the blatant attack on election integrity by the Republican members of the Ohio Ballot Board and ordered them to reconvene,” said Antonio. “While this decision enables Ohioans to make a more informed choice by addressing some of the most deceptive language, other misleading and argumentative language still remains. This further highlights the need for Ohioans to select Supreme Court justices who uphold the principles of democracy over party affiliation. I continue to support Issue 1 and strongly believe Ohio citizens should decide their future, not self-serving politicians.”

The Ohio Supreme Court also granted a motion by state Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) and state Representative Terrence Upchurch (D-Cleveland) and ruled the Attorney General’s challenge as moot.
