Antonio Statement on Leaked Supreme Court Abortion Decision

Today, state Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) issued a statement in response to the leaked U.S. Supreme Court opinion, indicating that the Court would overturn Roe v. Wade, remove the federal constitutional right to abortion and give the power to restrict or ban abortion to each state. The Court’s decision will not be considered final until it is published in the coming months.
“If the Supreme Court chooses to overturn Roe v. Wade, it will have catastrophic consequences for women across the country, millions of whom would live in states where abortion will no longer be legal or accessible. In overturning a woman’s right to choose, I share the concern that we will have laid a roadmap to upend other civil rights, including protections for the LGBTQ community.
“Every American is guaranteed the right to privacy under our Constitution. We cannot and will not be pushed back into the closet or treated as less than full citizens. It is long past time we codify abortion rights and rights for the LGBTQ community to ensure every person in our country can enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
