Sens. Antonio & Brenner testify on Esther's Law

Today, state Sens. Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood) and Andrew O. Brenner (R-Powell) provided sponsor testimony on Senate Bill 255, “Esther’s Law.” This legislation would permit a resident of a long-term care facility to conduct electronic monitoring of their room.
“This bill is named after Esther Piskor, who tragically passed away while in a nursing home facility in Northeast Ohio after her son caught health care professionals abusing her on camera,” said Antonio. “This legislation is an important first step to mitigate any elder abuse within long-term care facilities in Ohio. As legislators, it is our responsibility to protect the most vulnerable citizens in our state, especially the elderly.”
Elder abuse refers to any knowing, intentional or negligent act by a caregiver or any person that causes harm or serious risk of harm to a vulnerable, older adult. There are more than 16,000 reports of this type of abuse, neglect and exploitation made each year in Ohio.
“Having had several constituents reach out to me on this issue, I believe this bill to be the next best course of action to address the problem of elder abuse,” said Brenner. “I look forward to having members of the public in to testify, to expound on what is happening in these facilities and why electronic monitoring would be of benefit to their loved ones.”
