O'Brien Introduces Legislation to Lower Ohioans' Property Tax Bills
COLUMBUS— State Senator Sandra O'Brien (R-Ashtabula) today introduced legislation to keep more of Ohioans’ hard-earned money in their pockets by providing property tax relief. Ohio taxpayers have already seen historic property valuation increases over the past few years. This has led to larger and larger property tax bills, putting more pressure on Ohioans to make ends meet.
Ohio’s property tax burden ranked #11 for the highest effective property tax rate nationwide in 2022 at nearly 1.3%, and the data does not include the most recent increases in 2023 and 2024.
“Ohioans have some of the largest property tax bills in the nation,” O’Brien said, “and we have a mandate from the voters to do something about it.”
Senate Bill 66, which will now be referred to a Senate committee, would save Ohio property owners nearly $300 million in the next three years by modifying a school district’s 20-mill floor calculation. The new calculation would include most voted levies and would include all inside millage, including permanent improvement levies.
