COLUMBUS—State Senator Sandra O'Brien (R-Ashtabula) this week paid tribute to retired Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland, who passed away at the age of 67 after a year-long battle with brain cancer last week. "Sheriff McClelland was known to the members of his community for his compassion and humor," O'Brien said. "Yet when times required it, he demonstrated decisive leadership. Geauga County is truly better and safer because of him." Sheriff McClelland lived his entire life in Geauga County, and served this community for 44 years, including 13 years as the Sheriff. During his years of service with the county sheriff’s office, he had a faithful K9 companion named Midge, a miniature Chihuahua-rat terrier mix who holds the Guinness World Record for being the smallest certified police dog in the world. Midge herself died just hours after Sheriff McClelland and will be buried at his side. Sheriff McClelland is survived by his wife Beverly, his high school sweetheart to whom he was married for 49 years, and their three children, Daniel, Kelly, and Andy.
