O'Brien, Roegner Take Next Steps in Defending the Sanctity of Life

COLUMBUS—State Senators Sandra O'Brien (R-Ashtabula) and Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) today introduced Senate Bill 123, which will set conditions for abortion to be illegal in Ohio if certain decisions are made at the federal level.
The Human Life Protection Act would go immediately into effect when either of the following has occurred: a ruling made by the United States Supreme Court or the adoption of an amendment to the United States Constitution which upholds Ohio’s authority under the federal system to prohibit abortion.
“The primary purpose of government is to protect our rights from being infringed upon by others, with the first and foremost of those being the right to life,” said O’Brien. “This bill will ensure that the right to life of unborn individuals is protected here in Ohio.”
Under the legislation, any person who is found guilty of causing or inducing an abortion is guilty of criminal abortion, a felony of the fourth degree. Immunity would be provided to the women on whom the illegal abortion would be performed.
“I believe that when the U.S. Supreme Court considers a challenge to Roe, they will realize that the original decision from 1973 was seriously flawed, and return the authority regarding abortion to the states," Roegner said. "This is why Ohio should be proactive in passing this legislation, declaring that we respect the snactity of life and will defend the most vulnerable among us – the unborn.”
