Senate Passes O'Brien Bill Allowing Credit Card Payments at County Departments of Probation

COLUMBUS—State Senator Sandra O'Brien (R-Ashtabula) announced today the passage of Senate Bill 63, which would allow a board of county commissioners to authorize a county department of probation to accept payments via credit card. "This bill streamlines the functions of state government by allowing county probation departments to accept payments for county expenses ordered by the court of common pleas," O'Brien said. "This is a simple solution that creates a much smoother process for both county probation departments and the individuals paying them." Currently, boards of county commissioners have the ability to authorize county officials to utilize credit cards to accept payments for county expenses. However, the wording of the definition of “county official” in this section of the Ohio Revised Code excludes a county probation department from being able to accept payments via credit card.
