COLUMBUS—State Senator Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro) announced the investment of more than $21.8 million into the 17th Senate District for economic development projects along local waterfronts. More than $203 million will be awarded for projects throughout Appalachian Ohio that create and promote new tourism and recreational activities, revitalize historic waterfront downtowns, and more.

"The Buckeye State's success hinges on the success of Appalachia. Southern Ohio has so much to offer our residents and tourists, including beautiful waterways that give us all something to enjoy," Wilkin said. "I'm excited to see these funds come to deserving communities that will use them to grow their economies, support local businesses, and provide more opportunities for all Ohioans."

Projects in the 17th Senate District receiving funding include:

  • Gallipolis Riverfront and Streetscape Improvements (Gallia County): $9,044,400
  • Proctorville Lock 27 Redevelopment (Lawrence County): $5,206,800
  • Burlington Riverfront Park Redevelopment (Lawrence County): $1,003,660
  • South Point Park Improvements (Lawrence County): $1,274,700
  • Ironton Riverfront Improvements and Ro-Na Theatre (Lawrence County): $5,277,310

The funding for these projects comes from the Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative, which is part of the Appalachian Community Grant Program that is investing $500 million into Appalachian Ohio. Senator Wilkin, at the time Representative Wilkin, supported funding this program in House Bill 377 last General Assembly.
