COLUMBUS—State Senator Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro) today announced three entities in the 17th Senate District have been awarded $53,455 to help health districts and solid waste management districts provide education and outreach to scrap tire-generating businesses on best practices to prevent illegal dumping. The funding comes from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Scrap Tire Education and Outreach Grant.

"These dollars will help our solid waste districts and health departments educate our local businesses on how to prevent the widespread open dumping of scrap tires across Ohio," Wilkin said. "This program will truly make a difference for communities combatting this problem."

Entities receiving funding include:

  • Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District, which will receive $20,000 to implement the education and outreach program throughout its two counties to more than 70 businesses.
  • Gallia County Health District was awarded $13,455 for outreach and education to approximately 90 businesses throughout the county.
  • Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District was awarded $20,000 for outreach and education to approximately 120 businesses throughout both counties.

The grant awards total $100,000 to seven organizations throughout the state. It is estimated that there are 8,000 scrap tire-generating businesses in Ohio, all of which play an important role in the proper management of scrap tires and the prevention of open dumping.
