A Day to Honor the Service and Sacrifice of Our Veterans

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of listening to the stories of my father and grandfather’s military service. In fact, it was these stories that instilled in me a desire to serve and largely inspired me to follow in their footsteps and join the Navy in 1972, the first step on my path to public service.
During my time in the Navy I had the privilege to meet some of the most courageous and self-sacrificing men and women. While my shipmates and I came from different backgrounds and walks of life, we all shared a common goal to dedicate our lives to serve and protect our country’s freedoms.
Veterans Day presents an opportunity for us to recognize and thank those who have nobly served our country so that we are able to enjoy the liberties that we sometimes take for granted. As a third generation veteran, I understand all too well the sacrifices of our servicemen and women, but I also know the sacrifices made by their families back at home.
While our veterans do not serve for recognition or acknowledgement of their service, it is important for us to honor their courage. Every freedom that we have, we owe to them and their willingness to defend this country we are so blessed to call home. During this Veterans Day weekend, I hope that you will pause and thank a neighbor who may have served many years ago, stop a stranger in uniform and shake their hand or listen to the stories of those who have served.
To all my fellow veterans – past, present and future – thank you. Serving alongside you has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life. We are grateful for you, and we honor you today, and always.
