COLUMBUS—On Wednesday, the Ohio Legislative Trails Caucus hosted its first meeting of the 133rd General Assembly. The bipartisan caucus, co-chaired by Senators Steve Wilson (R-Maineville) and Sean O’Brien (D-Bazetta), advocates for expanding, preserving and promoting Ohio’s expansive trail network.

More than 60 trail advocates participated in the meeting, including legislators, members of trail advocacy organizations, and representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, TourismOhio, and Ohio Development Services Agency. Started in March 2017, the Trails Caucus is the first of its kind in the nation.

“Ohio is fortunate to have so many beautiful and scenic trails in our communities,” said Wilson. “These trails provide numerous benefits for Ohioans, including increased public health, alternative transportation, and economic growth.”

Last year, the Trails Caucus and ODNR unveiled a comprehensive online trails portal, which includes a map and reference guide for a variety of outdoor trail activities. This year, the caucus is planning on hosting numerous in-district hikes to help legislators and constituents grasp the importance of continuing to build on the caucus' progress. “The Ohio Legislative Trails Caucus has already made great strides for Ohio’s incredible trail system, and I look forward to preserving and improving our trails through these efforts,” added Wilson. "Even though we officially designated 2018 as Ohio's 'Year of the Trails,' I am confident 2019 will be just as productive for our outdoor enthusiasts."
