Trails Caucus Applauds Nearly $7 Million Investment by Ohio Department of Natural Resources

COLUMBUS—State Senator Steve Wilson (R-Maineville), co-chairman of the Ohio Legislative Trails Caucus, is applauding a nearly $7 million investment by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to improve Ohio's expansive trails network. The funding comes from the Clean Ohio Trails Fund grant, which is one of three components of the Clean Ohio Fund to restore, protect and connect Ohio's natural and urban places.
"With investments like this coming into our communities, it is easy to understand the strong support we've seen for the Trails Caucus, and why trail enthusiasts were so eager to designate 2018 as Ohio's Year of the Trails," said Wilson. "It has been a genuine pleasure to parter with ODNR on a number of efforts this General Assembly, and I look forward to seeing the good work around the state that will be accomplished using these funds."
Ohioans approved the establishment of the $400 million bond program in 2000. This is the 13th round of funding to be awarded through the Clean Ohio Trails Fund. The nearly $7 million in reimbursement funding will be used in 14 counties to develop many miles of new trails, trail extensions, land acquisition and bridges. Grant recipients provide a 25 percent match for their projects.
"I am especially excited to see the additions that will be made to Murray Bike Trail in the Village of Mariemont as a result of this grant funding," added Wilson.
The proposed Mariemont project will construct a 1,900 foot-long, 10-foot-wide bike path along a former trolley car corridor along Murray Avenue.
"I'm happy any time our state's wonderful trails system receives funding," said Senator O'Brien, who co-chairs the Trails Caucus along with Senator Wilson. "I look forward to continuing to work with our partners at ODNR as we move into the next General Assembly to ensure that Ohio's trails retain their place as some of the finest in the country."
Additionally, earlier this year, the Trails Caucus and ODNR unveiled a comprehensive online trails portal, which includes a map and reference guide for a variety of outdoor trail activities. It serves as one-stop-shop for local residents to easily locate trails within the state.
